I think the core of website design is about layout and typography. And everything that involve those two will end up for the most effective and efficient way to presenting information. And since the current medium for presenting website is just the 2d screen sizes, then the current webs is the best approach.

So where we can play as a web designer now? I think on the illustration, image creation, editorial illustration, and animation.

Next frontier for new playground would be the ar/vr, 3d, hologram or flexible screen.
