We all know that Facebook has a feature called 3D Photo. As the name suggest it shows an image with 3d hologram-alike on your timeline. You can capture and publish it on Facebook using an iPhone or any phone with a depth camera.

We can also create a custom 3d photo by uploading two images. The main image and the depth image. The depth image is a greyscaled image that holds depth data. the darker the color means the farther from the viewer. There are many tutorials already about creating a custom 3D photo, so I will not repeat it here.

The idea is to implement the 3D effect into a text.

I have developed a web app called QuotesCover.com. It is basically an online tool to generate custom images with text over it. With the same technique as above, I added a new feature that enabling the user to download an image for Facebook 3D effect. I just duplicated the main image and generate the depth greyscaled image.

The user then can upload it together to their timeline to generate 3D Image. The result is mesmerizing!

So how to create it?

There is two way of creating it. Using a smartphone browser or using a desktop browser. The difference is just how to upload it to Facebook. The principle is to upload it on the DESKTOP version of facebook so they can render the 3D Image. So when you are using a smartphone browser you need to activate desktop view first. Have a look at this video tutorial I made:

The steps are as follow:

  1. Open QuotesCover.com on your phone browser. Preferably Chrome.
  2. Follow the steps to create quotes images or You can directly open the quote maker app here.
  3. Save as Facebook 3d Images
You will have two images. The second image has _depth on its file name and it is greyscaled.

Once all downloaded now it is time to upload it to Facebook. Since you are making it via smartphone browser, you need to switch to DESKTOP view first, otherwise, the 3D generating process won’t work. Here is how to do it:

  1. Open https://web.facebook.com on your smartphone browser (Chrome)
  2. Tap on browser setting (three dots on the top right corner or on the bottom right corner on latest chrome)
  3. Choose Desktop view
  4. Once your facebook changed to desktop view you can start uploading both photos (the main and _depth photo) to the facebook post. Then Facebook will automatically convert it into 3D Photo. Tap on the post button once the 3D is ready.

Now you can view it in action using Facebook App or Desktop Browser.

How about creating it using a desktop browser?

Creating a 3d Effect using a desktop browser is easier. It basically the same as the above steps except that it doesn’t require switching to desktop view. Just open your browser, could be Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or Edge and then upload it to Facebook. Here is the video:
